After
studying art and receiving her degree from Winthrop University, Sudie
began painting in oils and acrylics. Her move to the creative
atmosphere of Key West, Florida in 1975 provided natural substance for
her skills and there began her professional career. Shrimp boats and
still-lifes were some of her first subjects. In 1977, she moved to
Conway, South Carolina, where she changed to watercolors 'because of
their light, airy feeling.' She has attended many workshops by
watercolor experts that have refined and modified her work. 'The
flowers found in most backyards are gorgeous and I enjoy transferring
that beauty to paper.' She has found a special interest in our native
and endangered plant species. More recently, her special ability with
color has appeared in her work and is especially depicted in some of
the brilliant tropical plant paintings. She has been doing monotypes
for several years and exhibits these along with her watercolors at
several galleries in the Carolinas. She has had one woman shows, has
judged shows, and has managed art exhibits. She was the President of
the South Carolina Watercolor Society from 1998 to1999.
